eritrichium nanum

Eritrichium nanum is found throughout the Alps and also occurs in North America.  However the plants in the Alps are generally more spectacular than those in the Rockies.  The plant generally grows in crevices in acidic rocks and is low growing and cushion forming.  The startling blue flowers are set off by the silky, hairy leaves.

In 1913 Reginald Farrer wrote that “ See it as often as you may - and by now I am growing almost hardened to its temptation - Eritrichium remains indisputably the king of one’s Alpine sensations.”

Eritrichium nanum is also known as the King of the Alps and the Bindelweg hike is one of the best places to see these beautiful plants in early July.
