Lewisia columbiana var. rupicola is the showiest variety of Lewisia columbiana and is restricted to the outer coastal mountains from northwestern Oregon to Vancouver Island. On our hike it is encountered first on the mossy rocks far below tree line, where it flowers relatively early, but is also found on alpine rocky terrain much higher. The species is on the Blue List of the BC Conservation Data Centre and should not be collected. A relative, Lewisia pygmaea, is found on Mount Arrowsmith southwest of the saddle. This is believed to be the only occurrence of this species on Vancouver Island.
