Lewisia cotyledon is a relatively common rock garden plant and many hybrids have been developed.  Its range is very restricted in the wild being found only in northern California and southern Oregon mostly in the Siskiyou Mountains. It is not easy to see the plant in flower as it inhabits rocky cliffs mostly above 1200 m and flowers soon after snowmelt.  It has a large carrot-like root that enables the plant to seek out moisture in crevices and also to establish a firm anchor in exposed positions on rock faces.
