lupinus nootkatensis

The featured plant for this hike is Nootka lupine (Lupinus nootkatensis). It is at the same time one of the most beautiful and most common plants on this mountain. Distributed along the outer coast and in the north-west of the province, it completely replaces the arctic lupine (Lupinus  arcticus) that is so abundant only 50 km to the east on Mount Arrowsmith. On misty days this lupine puts on a dazzling cover of glistening water beads suspended on top of its dense coat of long hairs. This can be seen on all stages of this plant, from small seedlings, to large flowering specimens. Seeing this is one of the rewards the hiker gets for enduring a day of “socked-in” weather up there

Lupinus nootkatensis is a plant of the outer coast of British Columboa and has beautiful foliage.
